I guess everyone’s got a hobby, this isn’t a bad one, but I imagine it’s usually a lot less exciting than this clip!

I believe it usually consists of wearing an anorak and sitting in a lawn chair next to railroad tracks, furiously scribbling down equipment numbers in a bunch of notebooks. I could picture Hoovie maybe doing it, if he wasn't rich and into cars.

Nah. Back at the start of the COVID epidemic I got sucked into watching Hobos on Youtube. Stobie the Hobo in particular. I’m just a casual rail fan myself. I won’t go out of my way to see a train, but when I do, I’ll watch and do the touristy train stuff. In my long life I’ve done steam excursions, done the Chattanooga Choo Choo thing, took the kids to Day out with Thomas, etc.

Just tossing out my idea of pithy little one word quip. ;)

I used to work in field service for a wheel m anufacturer. FRN (Effing railroad nut) was the general term for railfans, but most in the industry were kinda fans themselves really.

It was funny, because I would be out on tests, and railfans would know about us somehow, and be along the tracks watching the oddball consists we were in. We never knew how they knew, since it wa s pre internet, but they did.
